Clewiston rolls in Classic

21.05.2006, 08:12

Under a head coach not named Morrell for only the second time in 30 years, the Clewiston Tigers seemed to have adapted very well as they easily handled the Lakeworth Trojans 27-7 in their Spring Jamboree Classic.

New Tiger coach Larry Antonacci's first edition of the Tigers looked promising as they reeled off 322 yards of total offense.

Star tailback Jamal Hubert, picking right up where he finished last year, carried the ball 11 times for 194 yards including touchdowns runs of 49, 56 and 1 yards. Hubert was the Tigers' leading rusher last season when he rushed for 1,030 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Returning quarterback Jared Combass played sparingly and completed 5-of-9 passes for 58 yards.

After the contest, Antonacci indicated that he saw what he expected in the Tigers' squad.

"They still have a lot to learn mentally," he said. "We've installed a whole new system, new plays and terminology and that is a lot to completely learn in a few weeks of spring practice."

Antonacci also indicated that the squad has "good talent at the skill positions but needs to find some lineman."

Antonacci returned to Clewiston where he served as assistant to Al Morrell for several years back in the late 1980s. Al Morrell retired from the head coach position after 2001 and is now finishing his final days as athletic director at Clewiston.

His son Tommy Morrell coached the Tigers for two season but stepped down from the position and remained to coach the defensive secondary.
